From
much experience taking long car trips, when traveling with children,
parents have to expect messes. Families are often eating in the car,
passing snacks etc. We have found a few items to be essential to our
packing list.
Even if the last child is out of diapers, store a couple of ultratrim
diapers (less space) under the front seat. When someone tips over a Biggie
drink or the thermos leaks, a diaper will soak up the liquid before it's
had a chance to get past the Scotchguard. Then the mess can be thrown
away. Much better than a pile of soggy napkins that half does the job.
Toss a handful of computer screen wipes into the glove box for cleaning
off fingerprints and smears from the inside of car windows.
Gallon size zip-loc bags are great for holding soiled or wet clothing
until you have an opportunity to take care of it. Something that holds in
any odors is a good idea. A small vinyl table cloth and a towel (also
handy for picnics) also provide a comfortable temporary barrier for a wet
seat and a child's bottom. Don't forget wet wipes to clean up children's
hands, faces, etc.
Finally, when the suitcases are packed in the trunk or in the car
top carrier on the roof of the
van, it's a good idea to keep a small duffel of clothing for the children
somewhere inside the car, including underclothes, for the unexpected. On
the long stretches of road, getting into a clean t-shirt and shorts seems
to refresh the kids, and they certainly look better when stopping at the
next attraction or rest area.
